Mike’s Wine Pick Of The Month

My current favourite child.

Just like human kids, sometimes I prefer one of our wine kids more than another. I recently re-tasted our Greenskin 2018 Cabernet Merlot from Margaret River, and I was in no doubt that it is my current favourite.

I will admit that other factors such as the type of day (cool & cloudy), the little wedge of Gorgonzola, some black olives and some salty crackers played well into my overall assessment – but now a four-year-old, it has matured very gracefully and smoothly (I refrain from any comparison with the humans that are significantly older) into a wine that has all of the hallmarks of this classic Bordeaux Blend.

The colour is still a vibrant red with no signs of premature ageing.

The Bouquet still has plenty of lifted blackcurrant and plum fruit while the benefit of being tucked away in a dark and anaerobic place (ie the mighty Greenskin pouch) has allowed the development of complex toasty and earthy tones which are a sign of its pedigree.

The palate is smooth, generous and firm with fine tannin dryness and fruit power that lingers – until the next sip.

Enjoy your Greenskin 2018 Cabernet Merlot with any meat dishes, spicy food or a simple cheese plate, it’s a beauty!
