If you love bold, full-bodied reds, chances are you’ve come across both Syrah and Shiraz on wine labels.
Syrah and Shiraz are genetically identical. The real difference lies in where the grape is grown and how the wine is made.
Originating in the Rhône Valley of southern France, Syrah is the original name of the grape. It produces wines that are savoury, structured and elegant, often with flavours of dark berries, cracked pepper, herbs and a hint of smokiness.
When this grape made its way to Australia in the 1830s, winemakers noticed it thrived in the warmer climate and took on a riper, more fruit-forward character. They gave it a new name: Shiraz.

.
Climate has a huge impact on the flavour and structure of Syrah/Shiraz wines.
We proudly use the name Syrah for our 2021 Margaret River release because it’s made in the classic Rhône style – elegant, complex, and refined.
Crafted by winemaker Japo Dalli Cani (McHenry Hohnen), this 2021 Syrah is all about balance: rich blackcurrant and plum flavours, lifted by black pepper, earthy spice, and silky tannins.
Whether you call it Syrah or Shiraz, this versatile grape has proven its ability to adapt and shine in diverse climates and winemaking styles.
From the savoury elegance of French Syrah to the bold, fruit-forward intensity of Australian Shiraz, there’s a world of flavour to explore in every glass. Understanding the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences between the two can enhance your appreciation and help you choose the perfect bottle for your taste or occasion.
So next time you’re browsing the wine aisle or scanning a wine list, you’ll know exactly what to expect, no matter which name is on the label.
Cheers,
Mike and Kim
