Why Does Some Wine Give Me a Headache?

Because wine is made from grapes, it is a common misconception that all wine is Vegan. In a winemaker’s perfect world, that would be the case.
However, during the wine-making process, the wine often contains unwanted characters from the grapes and/or the fermentation process. To remove these characters, winemakers may use what are known as ‘fining agents’.
Common fining agents include:

These agents bind to the unwanted particles, helping them sink to the bottom of the tank or be filtered out. Most of it is removed, but trace amounts can remain, meaning the wine is no longer strictly vegan-friendly.
While fining agents play a technical role in winemaking, they generally don’t have a noticeable impact on the taste of the finished wine. Their job happens behind the scenes, helping polish the wine’s appearance and mouthfeel without leaving behind flavour traces.
That said, wines that don’t require fining often reflect pristine fruit quality and careful winemaking, as they naturally settle out any unwanted elements. In these cases, winemakers can skip fining altogether, allowing the wine’s pure, unadulterated character to shine through, which is often the case with our vegan-friendly Greenskin wines.
In short, a wine that needs fining doesn’t always mean it’s bad, but a wine that doesn’t need fining? That’s usually a sign of exceptional fruit quality and winemaking. Our vegan wines fall into the latter camp.
