SUSTAINABILITY
it’s never been easier to enjoy a good red or white while being green.
Our innovative Greenskin Wine pouches are 100% recyclable, and included in every 6-pack of Greenskin Wine is a postage-paid satchel for your to return your empties.
Although our recycling program is on a temporary hold (since the demise of RedCycle), we are working very hard on an alternative and ask you to hold onto your empties for now. We hope to have some good news with an alternate recycling partner very soon!
Beyond the recycling element, Greenskin Wine is still a far more sustainable way to enjoy your favourite drops!
but how is plastic better than glass for the environment?
It is a common misconception that wine in glass is the most sustainable packaging option. This is very incorrect.
Here are the reasons why Greenskin Wine pouches are more environmentally sustainable than glass.
hard facts
It’s a fact that glass bottles, their secondary packaging and transport represent *68% of the product’s carbon footprint! *Source: Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI).
If every single bottle we bought, we washed and repeatedly refilled, glass would be the best. But, this doesn’t happen, and (sadly) more than 50% ends up in landfills around Australia no matter what colour bin you place it in.
Plus, with data indicating that the vast majority of wines are consumed within two weeks of purchase, the fact they are still packaged in glass (which was originally for cellaring purposes) is certainly not the most sustainable option!
so what's the problem with glass?
- Glass is extremely energy intensive to produce.
- Glass is bulky and heavy to transport.
- The shape of glass is inefficient to transport - think of all that space between each round bottle.
- Very little glass in Australia is recycled.
- An Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation report has estimated that of the 1.3 million tonnes of glass discarded in Australia each year, less than half – 46 per cent – is recovered.
- When it is recycled, it has to be sorted and reheated. More energy. More carbon!

the greenskin difference

- A Greenskin pouch takes 80% less energy to produce than an equivalent 750ml glass bottle.
- A Greenskin pouch emits far fewer carbon emissions to transport due to its lightweight, compact nature.
- For example, when we transport one (1) truckload of empty Greenskin pouches to a winery to get filled, to transport the same volume of empty glass bottles it would take twenty-six (26) trucks!
- This is before the containers get filled, and sent to the market, where Greenskin is 60% of the weight and the space of standard 750ml glass bottles, further reducing harmful carbon emissions.
- Greenskin Wine pouches are 100% recyclable.
Wine producers worldwide are taking extraordinary measures to reduce their carbon footprint by adopting sustainable viticulture practices eg: organic, biodynamic etc.
But with the growing concern about the volume of glass that ends up in landfill, plus the energy required to produce a glass bottle and transport it to market, wine packaging is the next obvious place to further reduce their environmental impact, and increase the sustainability of the wine industry as a whole.
We’re so pleased to be leading the change into more sustainable wine packaging and we thank you for being part of the change!

australian packaging covenant MEMBERS

Greenskin Wine is also a proud member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO).
The APCO is a not for profit organisation leading the development of a circular economy for packaging in Australia. The APCO vision is a packaging value chain that collaborates to keep packaging materials out of landfill and retains the maximum value of the materials, energy and labour within the local economy.
Through our APCO membership Greenskin Wine aims to maximise our sustainability credentials by committing to a system of scrutiny and measurement that will ensure any claims we make can be verified and compared to industry best practices.
While it is not mandatory for us to join this organisation, we firmly believe that it is a significant way for us to “walk the talk” which we trust will give you, our greatest asset, a greater connection to our commitment to sustainability in wine packaging.
See how we’re tracking here:
The idea of putting wine into a soft pouch reared its head over a long lunch about ten years ago, but back then, the pouches were not recyclable and bringing more plastic into the world, and the oceans we so love, just did not sit well with us.
Over time, technology of materials and recycling methods have improved, and the Greenskin pouch is now 100% recyclable, which gave us the motivation to proceed. Our creative daughter, Ellen, coined the name Greenskin (a play on the wine term Clean Skin & incorporated the environmental side), which we loved from the outset.
We are thrilled to fuse our passion for great wine, the environment, and an active, outdoor lifestyle to give Aussies something that genuinely solves a problem for them all while being kinder to the planet.
We are so glad that you can be a part of the change!Cheers,
Mike & Kim (Co-founders)
